Lower Mainland winters are long, wet and dirty. Road grime, brake dust and the salt and brine sprayed on roads in cold snaps all stick to bare paint. A protective layer makes the car easier to clean and slows that wear down. Here’s how the three main options compare.
Traditional wax
Carnauba wax gives a warm shine, but it’s soft. In steady rain and regular washing, it usually wears off within a few weeks to a couple of months.
Ceramic sealant
A ceramic (SiO₂) sealant bonds to the paint far more firmly than wax. Water beads and rolls off, grime has less to grip, and it lasts much longer. Ours is rated for up to a year. It’s the sweet spot for most daily drivers: real protection without the cost of a full coating.
Professional ceramic coating
A multi-year ceramic coating is thicker and harder, but it needs paint correction first and usually costs many hundreds of dollars or more. It’s worth it for new or high-value cars you plan to keep for years.
Why the clay bar matters
Run your fingers over a “clean” car and it often feels gritty. That’s bonded contamination (rail dust, tar, overspray) that washing doesn’t remove. Claying it off first lets a sealant bond to the paint itself rather than the dirt, so it lasts longer and looks glossier.
Our recommendation
Apply a sealant in the fall, before the rain sets in. Our Ceramic Wash & Seal is a hand wash, clay bar and 1-year ceramic sealant, from $99. Between visits, a Mini Exterior keeps it topped up.
